To commemorate our 40th anniversary year, we have decided to support a nominated charity that chorus members can fundraise for in a variety of ways – whether by participating in the Candlelighters’ own events calendar or creating fundraising activities of their own. So far members have been raising funds by making and selling jewellery, cakes and decorated Easter eggs … as well as raffling a variety of goodies … and there is much more to come!
As we are based in Leeds, we have chosen a charity whose focus is supporting families facing children’s cancer in Yorkshire. Sadly, one of our chorus members has personal experience of drawing on that support, along with many other ordinary families who are facing extraordinary circumstances. Each year, in Yorkshire alone, around 150 children are diagnosed with some form of cancer.
Established in 1976, Candlelighters is dedicated to combating childhood cancer, leukaemia and serious blood disorders. In February 2015, they opened The Square, a support centre for families who are being or have been affected by childhood cancer. The charity offers family support in many forms, from practical financial support for families and funded holidays, to talking therapies, wellbeing treatments and support groups for siblings.
The charity invests around half a million pounds each year into research, as well as in the wards at the Leeds General Infirmary by funding posts and equipment.
In order to sustain their services, Candlelighters needs to raise £1.5m every year, and we are pleased to be making a contribution in this special year for The White Rosettes.
